Urbana, Illinois
February 2011 Update: Urbana has been named a 2011 Smarter City for Transportation. Urbana shares a border with the neighboring city of Champaign. Urbana is home to a large part of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, which straddles both cities. The student population of about 40,000 also largely resides in Urbana around the campus, with many students walking to class.
The city of Urbana has been working with the city of Champaign to establish a Long Range Transportation Plan in order to elevate pedestrians, bicycles, and public transit in planning. The cities have been allocating funds to revamp car-centric roadways that have been historically unsafe for pedestrians and bicycles. Investments include creating bike lanes, building refuge islands for pedestrians at bus stops, installing additional sidewalks and larger sidewalk cafés (any café with outdoor seating alongside the sidewalk), adding bus shelters, and improving the lighting on poorly lit streets.
