Rising beside Lake Eyrie, Cleveland grew as a manufacturing center based on Great Lakes shipping traffic. Having weathered the decline of its manufacturing industry, the city is making significant strides towards remediating the damage from industrial pollution, building a new economy and maintaining the rich architectural heritage of its downtown core.

Endowed with manufacturing facities and a trained workforce, Ohio is taking on jobs creating photovoltaics and parts for wind mill. It's local food movement is robust, and the city is home to several farmers' markets  not to mention the Great Lakes Brewing Company makes it beer with local ingredients and runs a veggie-oil powered fleet.

While it is almost obligatory to mention the Cuyahoga River catching fire in 1970 and the subsequent creation of the Water Act of 1972 (see Cleveland Celebrates A River Reborn), the river  is now one of 14 American Heritage Rivers in the United States and the centerpiece of Ohio’s only national park (the Cuyahoga Valley).
