February 2011 Update: Washington D.C. has been named a 2011 Smarter City for Transportation. Based on the number of walkable urban places per capita, The Brookings Institution ranked Washington as the number one most walkable city in America in 2008, and 96 percent of residents live within walking distance—a quarter of a mile—of a public transit stop.
Its rail line hauls more than one million riders every day, ranking it second in the country (behind New York) for heavy rail ridership. The District Department of Transportation created goDCgo.com as a resource for alternative modes of getting from one place to another in the nation’s capital, with information including bike maps, transit maps, and carpooling and carsharing options.

I have to say, I never thought about this until I saw this description of D.C., but having grown up in particular areas of the South, I became accustomed to driving everywhere. But when I lived in D.C., without even really realizing it, I started walking and metro-riding essentially everywhere, and I probably only filled my car up with gas three or four times the entire year I lived in D.C. It also had a great secondary benefit....getting me in better shape!
