February 2011 Update: New Haven has been named a 2011 Smarter City for Transportation. New Haven revolves around green space. When the city was developed in the mid-17th century, it followed the English custom of nine city squares around a tenth, which would serve as a public common.
This public space, New Haven Green, is still the heartbeat of the town, serving as a central gathering spot surrounded by the Yale University campus, the center of commerce and culture, and civic institutions including the public library. Seventeen percent of the city's 21 square miles is dedicated park land, and there are more than 33,000 street trees. According to some, New Haven had the first public tree-planting program in the country, and has been dubbed "Elm City" because of the abundance of elm trees.
Having a distinct downtown area where work, school, culture and government mingle helps make New Haven a place where walking and biking are convenient. But for longer trips, the city is also serviced by Amtrak; Shore Line East, the Connecticut Commuter Rail; and New York's Metro-North Railroad; and offers access to Zipcar car sharing. Historic electric trolleys run on a downtown loop, and a state-owned bus service shuttles riders all over the state.
