Santa Rosa, California
Santa Rosa, a gateway to California's wine country north of San Francisco, has adopted innovative energy practices—using unique sources such as algae and geysers—that have allotted it the top spot in energy use among medium-size cities.
Since July 2007, the city has been growing algae in wastewater, a non-food crop that can produce lipids for biodiesel on plots a fraction of the size required by corn and soybeans, and can also clean wastewater by removing nitrates and phosphates. This project was expanded to extract methane to power a reclaimed water irrigation system, a project that won Santa Rosa the ICLEI Innovation Award in May 2008. The city is also working in a public-private partnership to make biodiesel from waste grease collected from restaurants and sewer lines, creating fuel for the city's fleet and cleaning wastewater.
Two of Santa Rosa's largest sources of power are geothermal and solar. Like many of its California neighbors, including San Francisco and San Jose, Santa Rosa was named one of America's 25 Solar Cities by the Department of Energy. With the city's unique Geysers Recharge Project, 11 million gallons of recycled water are sent to the geysers' steam fields, increasing the production of geothermal energy by 85 megawatts a year, or enough to meet the energy needs of 100,000 households.
