Boca Raton, which is known for having some of the most expensive gated communities in the country, is making strides toward developing more affordable housing opportunities.

In June 2008 it created an 11-member Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, with members including representatives for low-income residents, the banking and mortgage industry, and nonprofit and for-profit affordable-housing providers. It aims to bring a full range of affordable-housing opportunities to the city to support its service-industry workforce, which makes up a great deal of the city’s employment, and for whom the ratio of wages to housing cost is especially disproportionate.
