Gastonia, North Carolina
Gastonia's Wastewater Treatment Division was the first government entity to win the North Carolina Environmental Stewardship Award in 2005, an award from the state's voluntary Environmental Stewardship Initiative to promote sustainability by example in the community.
To maintain membership as a steward, it must meet program requirements for five years, which include going beyond compliance for pollution prevention.
