Since the 1970s, the Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission has existed to protect the city's natural resources and work with the planning commission to create development that is responsible and sensitive to the environment.

Appointed members must be residents of the city, and often have backgrounds in history, ecology, preservation, landscape architecture, engineering and geography—but membership is not limited to conservation or urban professionals.

The organization Environment Rhode Island urges residents to push for better air quality policy, from fully enforcing the Clean Air Act to reducing dirty diesel.
